Nazanin: Post #3

While I was watching the local news last night I caught the tail end of a story that I have been trying to follow. A young 18 year old woman who was to be sentenced to death for murdering a man who was trying to rape her and her niece. This took place in Iran, so it has been a little hard for me to follow. Anyway…..a woman…also named Nazanin who lives here in BC, had been on the morning news show that I watch every morning. She gave website address to a petition online to try to save this girls life, which of course I signed…and also urged others to do the same. Well, Nazanin, (the one from here) was on the news last night stating that the charges for execution have been stayed in the case and that the case has now been moved to a lower court. She is travelling, with all the signatures on the petition, to meet with one of the Iranian officials, to try to help save the 18 year old Nazanin's life. If anyone has anymore information on this matter…please leave a link or a comment. Thank you!

The Rising Price of Gasoline…..

Gasoline prices are through the roof….the "average" gasoline price in Vancouver today is at $1.20 per litre.  While this is shocking…..it really shouldn't be, there is not a never ending supply.  There will come a day when the supply will run out, or when it will become such a precious commodity that the price will be even higher than we could possibly fathom.

Car dealers are still trying to pimp their gasoline powered vehicles, offering free gas with a purchase.  Sales must be horrible.  Why would anyone even think of purchasing a gas powered vehicle at this point in time.  The only vehicles I could see be sold sold right now would be the Hybrids.

What I am wondering is when is the goverment going to address the issue regarding the gas tax?  Gas taxes make up as much as 38% of the total price at the pump, with GST being charged on that tax as well.  Basically….we are being taxed on a tax……that is completely ridiculous.  Send a message to the Canadian government to try to encourage them to make fuel prices more affordable.

Need Drugs? Just Ask Vancouver Mayor….

Sam Sullivan, the Mayor of Vancouver has admitted to Vancouver Police that he purchased crack cocaine for two addicts, before he became Mayor of the city. I have heard his views on the drug problem on the downtown eastside of Vancouver…but buying an addict drugs..in my opinion..is just adding fuel to the fire. If you want to help someone, particularly an addict, they first have to want to atleast want to help themselves, and they have to get away from that whole scene…including getting away from any and all people they know, that are involved in that lifestyle.

What a complete embarassment to the city. And we are hosting the 2010 Olympics? The same Mr. Sullivan was just in Torino, in front of the whole world accepting the Olympic flag? And now this? It will be interesting to see how the Vancouver Police handle this incident…and if they are lenient on the Mayor then what will happen to people in future who might be charged with the same offense? The Vancouver police….on the news, stated that they will not be giving special treatment to Mayor Sullivan…..yeah ok, we’ll see about that.

Flags Should Fly at Half Mast……

Posted in Politics on April 26, 2006 by taraden

Four Canadian soldiers were recently killed in Afghanistan, and while I agree with the government banning the media when their caskets arrived back in Canada, I still think flags should have been lowered to half mast.  Their families deserve the respect and honor…..those men DIED for their country.

The federal government of Canada has made a decision not to lower flags to half mast, to honor Canadian Soldiers who have died while serving our country.  They are defending the decision by stating that before the Liberals were in power, flags were not drawn to half mast.  And that they are returning to an 80 year old tradition, remembering all soldiers that are casualties of war only on Rememberance Day ~ November 11.

Some critics are stating that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is following the lead of U.S. President George Bush, as he too has has done the very same thing during the war in Iraq.

Scary!

Nazanin: Repeat Post….Why you ask? Cause This Is IMPORTANT

I have already posted on this issue……but this needs to be brought to people's attention……

On January 3, 2006…. 18 year old Nazanin was sentenced to death for murder by an Iranian court.  She had admitted to fatally stabbing one of three men who were attempting to rape her and her 16 year old niece in March of 2005.

Her sentence is subject to review by the Court of Appeal.  The Iranian Penal Code limits the use of self defense as a defense against aggresion, but then if Nazanin had allowed the rape to take place, she could also have been convicted of having sex outside of marriage, unless 4 male witnesses to the act of rape would testify to her behalf.

If you would like to sign the online petition to try to save Nazanin's life, please go HERE .

This petition is directed to The Secretary General of the United Nations ~ Kofi Annan, The United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights ~ Louise Arbour, The Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran ~ Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, and The Head of the Judiciary of IRI ~ Ayatollah Mahmoud Has.

A recent visitor to this blog…..Robb….also left a link to this site.  Please visit, sign the petition, and consider trying to help save this young womans life.

Nazanin to be hanged
