The Edmonton Oilers…..Canada’s Only Hope At Lord Stanley’s Cup…..

Posted in Hockey, Sports on May 18, 2006 by taraden

The Edmonton Oilers shut out San Jose last night 2-0, advancing them further into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  And while the Edmonton Oilers are not particularly my favorite hockey team (err…. Vancouver Canucks fan here), or even my second favorite team (**cough** Calgary Flames) they are the only Canadian team remaining in the playoffs.

This morning there were reports on the news that hockey fans in Edmonton got a little rowdy last night after the win.  And while it is exciting when your team wins, and there is reason to celebrate…..the is no reason for violence.  Can't everyone just celebrate in a mature manner?  Why must the riot sqwad get called out?  Why do people feel the need to get into fights and beat people up?  This should be a happy time….not a time filled with violence.  This also does not reflect well on the city or on the entire country for that matter.  There are people all over world watching the Stanley Cup Playoff's…..come on people…I know we can show a little more class than that.

And Now To The Memorial Cup……

The Vancouver Giants have won the Western Hockey League finals, shutting out The Moose Jaw Warriors with a 4-0 game victory!  What an amazing series for Vancouver,  though it would have been nice for them to win on home ice.   Now it is off the the Memorial Cup in Muncton, New Brunswick in just over a week.

Vancouver’s Other Fabulous Hockey Team…….

Last night Neil took me to go see a Vancouver Giants game. They are playing in the Western Hockey League Finals, against The Moose Jaw Warriors. It was the first game of the series, and Vancouver won 5-1. It was a really good game, and as I have stated before….for a not so expenive night out… is a good time, and you get to watch some great hockey.

Of course…as at pretty much any event you go to…..there is never a shortage of drunken idiots. We had an older couple sitting beside us to the left, who were drinking beer the entire game. Close to the end we could tell that the man was quite noticebly inebriated, and was starting to get annoying….yelling out at the top of his lungs…..”let’s kill em’…..squash them like a bug!!” Yeah….okay buddy….we are winning 5-1….and there is like three minutes left in the game….I think they already have. Then when they got up to leave his wife stumbled and tripped into me on their way out the aisle. The three guys who were sitting beside us to our right, said to each other….”okay, I wonder who is driving home?” I told them that we were jsut commenting on the same thing….and the scary thing is is that one of them most likely was going to get behind the wheel and drive home. But in any event it was a good game…..Go Giants Go!!!!

Goodbye to Mr. Crawford……

Breaking News…..

crawford 2.jpg

The Canucks have officially “relieved Mark Crawford of his duties as the teams head coach.”

Thank the lord! I think that is just what the team needs, a fresh, new perspective in the coaching department. Crawford seemed like an alright guy….but really…with the amount of talented players on the team, there is no reason for them not to be in a playoff position.

Hopefully the next season will produce some fantastic results…and….err…the team better consist of one of my fav’s, Mr. Bertuzzi.

That’s It…….It’s Over…..

My beloved Vancouver Canucks season is unofficially over. Their 5-3 loss last night against the San Jose Sharks has left them out of a playoff spot. ūüė¶ There is talk in Vancouver that Bertuzzi should be traded. I think he is a great player….He IS a CANUCK and I hope that he remains on the team. Personally I think they should concentrate more on the coaching issue.

As for the playoff’s……well I will now be cheering for my #2 team the Calgary Flames. So….instead of me typing GO CANUCKS GO……it will have to read GO FLAMES GO!!

Back From Vernon….

We got back from Vernon this afternoon, the trip went pretty good, and the roads were fine for us on our trip there and back.

We arrived in Vernon at around 9:00 on Friday nite. My daughter’s team had played 2 games by then….one of which they had won, the other they had tied. So they were in pretty good shape by the time we had gotten up there. We really didn’t do too much on Friday nite, just had a couple of beers with another couple, whom I know from the Ringette team. On Saturday morning our team had a game against Prince George, which we lost….they were a really good team…..they were really strong, and had alot of good skaters. Next we played Westside, which is Westbank (Kelowna) and we lost to them as well…..putting us out of the tournament for a medal. Oh well…I guess you can’t win them all! We had a fairly decent time there though, and it was nice to get out of the city. I had never been to Vernon ….so it was also nice to visit somewhere that I have never been to before. Saturday nite the team ordered some pizza¬†and we all hung out¬†in the “Common Room”…..a room that one of the father’s had rented for the team/parents to hang out in.¬†

The hotel that we stayed at had a “Business Room”, with computers and the internet.¬† I could have done some blogging from there, but the possibility of even getting into the room let alone the chance to¬†use the computers was pretty slim……we were in a hotel filled with 12-14 year old girls!¬† They only time I found the room empty was at 6:00 am on Sunday morning…I quickly checked my email and my bank balance, and then was soon accompanied by a girl from one of the Ringette teams…….so I figured I was lucky to have been able to do that, and quickly left before more arrived.

I have posted some pics of the trip on My Flickr , and have posted some here too……..

This picture is of my daughters Ringette team at the Provincial Tournament in Vernon, BC.

This¬†pic I took of the Rocky Mountains on the Coquilhalla Hwy……so beautiful!!

Another picture of the Rocky Mountains while driving on the Coquilhalla Hwy.

This pic I took on our way out of town.¬† There was this lookout point along the highway…so we stopped and I took some pictures.

This was the hotel we stayed at while in Vernon… was quite nice, the room was great, nice and clean….no complaints!

Can’t Wait To Get Out Of The City…..Even If It Is Only For The Weekend, And Only Five Hours Away…….

We are heading up to¬†¬†¬†¬†Vernon¬†¬†¬† this weekend.¬† My daughter plays¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Ringette¬†¬†¬†and her team is heading up there to play in the Provincial Tournament.¬† She will be leaving tomorrow (Wednesday) with one of her team members and¬†her¬†parents.¬† Because I can’t get the time off work… I will be heading up on Friday after work.¬† Neil is coming with me and as far as I know, he will be driving.¬† Hopefully the roads won’t be too bad, and we don’t have any problems getting there.¬† We have reserved a room at The Holiday Inn, along with the rest of the team, and will be there until Sunday.¬† My daughter has a game early Thursday morning, one on Friday morning, then two on Saturday.¬† If they make it into the finals, then they will be playing a game on Sunday.¬† Hopefully they will do good, and bring home a medal.
